Most full-time Wood Science graduate students receive some form of financial support. Many students receive a salary via a Graduate Assistantship (GA). Hourly wage positions, scholarships, and other financial aid may also available.

 

Graduate Assistantship (GA) Positions:

A Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) typically performs work such as:  assisting faculty in conducting research projects, either in a laboratory or field environment.

A Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) typically performs work such as:  assisting faculty in the delivery of courses, leading discussions, delivering lectures, preparing labs, or grading papers.

Work hours for a GA may be flexible and students on a GA are encouraged to speak with their supervisor about their expected schedule.

Most MS students in the Department of Wood Science & Engineering receive financial support for up to two years; most Ph.D. students receive support for up to three years.  

2021-2022 Current Annual GRA Pay Rate Range:

  • Masters: $49,860 at a 1.0 FTE (Full Time Equivalent)
    • MS students are hired at a 0.35 FTE, the minimum offered, up to a 0.49 FTE, which is the maximum.
    • The annual salary an MS student on a GA can range from $17,451 to $24,431.
  • PhD: $53,676 at a 1.0 FTE (Full Time Equivalent)
    • PhD students are hired at a 0.35 FTE, the minimum offered, up to a 0.49 FTE, which is the maximum.
    • The annual salary an PhD student on a GA can range from $18,787 to $26,301.

A GA position provides a monthly stipend and provides paid tuition, paid matriculation fee, coverage of up to 90% of student fees, and provides a mandatory health insurance plan.

Loans and Grants:

Financial Aid administers student loans and grants for U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

Scholarships and Fellowships:

The College of Forestry (CoF) awards fellowships ranging from $500-$8,000 per academic year to exceptional new and continuing graduate students.

New students wishing to be considered for a CoF fellowship must successfully complete an application for graduate admission before the end of November.

Continuing students must apply directly to the Department for consideration using the forms and procedures developed by the CoF Graduate Fellowship Committee.
